Starts!
Here is the first row at the site in Lakeview. We had some crookneck and zucchini that were ready to venture out into the wild world. This is our first try with brush-cut Iron and Clay peas as a green manure.
Anneka weeding the sweet potatoes.
...after brush cutting....
...making room for the plants and mixing in compost to make hills...
...and it rains right on time!
I cleared the middle section of the Mid City garden and broadcast Sorghum Sudangrass for soil building, a smother crop, hopefully cutting for mulch, and root knot nematode suppression. We had some gnarled carrots last year in a small patch of this section. After watching it come up a little spotty I'll use the seeder next time as it likes to be drilled according to the SARE cover crop book.
Banana spider (golden orb-weaver?)
I wasn't rooting for the spider in this bout....
...but it didn't need crowd support.
Our mirliton suddenly started struggling. I am pretty sure it is infected with the Anthracnose disease caused by a fungus. It eats these "shot holes" in the leaf according to Dr. Lance Hill at Mirlitons.org. I am wondering if some large galls on the stem at the root might be signs of root knot nematode damage, another common problem, but I have to do more research and send pictures to Professor Hill. It may be time to start a new plant and build a good horizontal trellising system which might be a good cure for rotting watermelons too.
I just started looking into this 4 inch slug I found. It looks like a Tropical Leatherleaf slug, an invasive that sounds pretty threatening to the not-too-reliable looking Wikipedia article (see the section on feeding habits).

Sweet Potatoes on the Bayou
Still trying to figure out how to do raised beds with voracious johnson and bermuda grass on all sides. I picked up the vines and put them in the raised bed, dug out all the grass and roots I could, and planted a buffer of Iron and Clay Peas. Might add some buckwheat on the edges too. Its never looked this good. We'll see what it looks like in a month...
you can never have too much eggplant
summertime bugs
Some moth chrysalis
leaf footed stink bug
Some other stink bug
southern green stink bug (larva)
adult southern green stink bug
Leaf footed stink bug nymphs
Regal looking grasshopper
